Landmarks

Seven teams played in 1973, and funding problems meant some early gaps between tournaments were as long as six years. New Zealand's only title came in 2000, in a four-run win over Australia. The competition has been run by the ICC since 2005, and the field has been fixed at eight teams since 2000.

Alyssa Healy scored 170 in the 2022 final and finished that tournament with 509 runs. In 2025, Laura Wolvaardt of South Africa scored 571 runs, the most in a single tournament, and Deepti Sharma was Player of the Tournament as India won their first title after finals defeats in 2005 and 2017. Alana King of Australia took 7/18 against South Africa in that tournament, the best bowling figures in the competition's history.

Debbie Hockley of New Zealand has scored the most runs in Women's World Cups, 1,501 between 1982 and 2000. Belinda Clark of Australia holds the highest individual score, 229 not out against Denmark in 1997.

What comes next

The ICC has decided to expand the tournament from eight to ten teams from the 2029 edition. The host and dates for that event have not been confirmed.
