Overview
The Pakistan Super League (PSL, sponsored as HBL PSL) is a professional Twenty20 franchise league organised by the Pakistan Cricket Board and first played in 2016. The 2026 edition, the eleventh, was won by Peshawar Zalmi, who beat debutants Hyderabad Kingsmen in the final.
The Pakistan Cricket Board announced the launch of the PSL in September 2015, and the commercial rights to the initial five franchises were sold for US$93 million over ten years in December 2015. The first season in 2016 was played entirely in the United Arab Emirates for security reasons, and Islamabad United beat Quetta Gladiators in the final in Dubai.
The league expanded to six teams with the addition of Multan Sultans in 2018. Matches were gradually brought back to Pakistan, with the 2017 final played in Lahore and the 2018 final in Karachi. The 2020 season was played in Pakistan, with its final delayed to November 2020, and the 2021 season was suspended and completed in Abu Dhabi in June 2021.
Islamabad United and Lahore Qalandars have each won three titles, Peshawar Zalmi two, and Quetta Gladiators, Karachi Kings and Multan Sultans one each. After the original ten-year franchise agreements expired, the PSL grew from six to eight teams for 2026 with Hyderabad Kingsmen and Rawalpindiz joining, while Multan Sultans returned under new ownership. From 2026 the league moved to an April-May window.
How it works
Eight city-based franchises play a double round-robin group stage, with two points for a win and one for a no-result. The top four teams advance to the playoffs, which use the Page playoff system, as in the IPL, leading to a final. A super over decides tied matches, including in the playoffs. The league follows ICC playing conditions and uses the DRS in T20 matches.
