Overview
The Hundred is the ECB's franchise league played in the 100-ball format, with separate men's and women's competitions of eight city-based teams, seven in England and one in Wales. In 2026 Manchester Super Giants won the men's title and Trent Rockets won the women's title, both for the first time.
A new city-based competition was first proposed by the ECB in September 2016, and ECB members voted 38-3 on 26 April 2017 to push ahead with it. The idea of making it a 100-ball format, rather than Twenty20, was put forward by the ECB's chief commercial officer Sanjay Patel in October 2017 because it would be simpler for new audiences to follow. The launch was delayed a year by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the first season was played in 2021.
Southern Brave won the first men's title and Oval Invincibles the first women's title, both beating opponents in the finals at Lord's on 21 August 2021. Oval Invincibles (now MI London) won three consecutive men's titles from 2023 to 2025 and two women's titles in 2021 and 2022, while Trent Rockets won the 2022 men's title and the 2026 women's title.
From 2024 the ECB moved to sell stakes in the eight franchises, with the host counties or MCC holding the majority, and investors including IPL team owners and US firms joined. Following these deals Oval Invincibles became MI London, Northern Superchargers became Sunrisers Leeds and Manchester Originals became Manchester Super Giants. 2026 was the first season in which the new TeamCos took full operational control.
How it works
Each innings is 100 balls, bowled in overs of five balls, with no bowler allowed more than four overs (20 balls). Eight teams play 32 league matches in each of the men's and women's competitions, with each team playing four home and four away games, including one against every other team plus a bonus game against its nearest regional rival. The top team goes straight to the final at Lord's, while the second and third-placed teams meet in an Eliminator at The Oval, and the winner joins the top team in the final. Men's and women's matches are held as double-headers at the same ground on the same day.
